Jerry Lewis's Queer Tour Rider
Comedian wants no mention of MDA in show promotion...or else

SEPTEMBER 4--With Jerry Lewis apologizing today for the anti-gay slur he uttered during this weekend's Labor Day telethon, it seemed like a good time to revisit the veteran comedian's tour rider, which reflects his complicated affiliation with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The rider, excerpts of which you'll find on the following pages, opens with an 'Important!' one-page message for promoters from the 81-year-old star's representatives. Lewis, the rider explains, is 'a professional performer...separate and aside from the work he does for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.' As such, the document warns that any mention of MDA in connection with the promotion of a Lewis gig will trigger cancellation of the agreement (and, presumably, would result in Lewis pocketing any upfront payments). And in case any well-meaning 'local MDA staff and local MDA supporters' approach concert promoters, 'please show them this disclaimer.' Lewis, who helped raise a record $63.8 million during this year's telethon, used the word 'faggot' yesterday during a bizarre televised bit. He apologized today for a 'bad choice of words.' (7 pages)
